Putting People First: Enabling People to Perform Better and Reach Their Full Potential

Workshop Description:

The key to getting the results you expect with lean is ensuring that your lean practices are enabling people to be successful in their work while pursuing their full potential. Of course, this is easier to say than to do. You need to be deliberate and explicit in how your systems, processes, and behaviors will enable people to perform their best to get the results you expect.

One way to be deliberate is to be explicit about the “people side” of lean when planning, doing, studying, and adjusting when – using PDSA / PDCA – when experimenting with lean practices. Research from psychology can make the science behind respect for people, including how it supports and is supported by continuous improvement, accessible and easier to put into practice. This workshop will present four psychology frameworks to understand, assess, and discuss individual needs and development to support people to perform their best when using lean practices:

  • Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
  • Pink’s three elements of true motivation – Autonomy, Mastery, and Purpose
  • Rohnke’s Psychological Performance Zones
  • Dweck’s Growth vs. Fixed Mindset

Learning Objectives:

  • Become familiar with how the frameworks presented show respect for people by enabling individual development.
  • Reflect on how your current systems, processes, and behaviors support people using the presented frameworks.
  • Develop a personal first-step plan to utilize the presented frameworks when experimenting with lean practices.

Testimonial:

“Katrina Appell’s ‘Putting People First’ workshop was valuable.  Using four psychology frameworks, Katrina led the group through thoughtful dialogue on how to set people up for success and reflect on our own strengths and opportunities to improve how we lead others.  There was a nice mix of theory and relatable examples in the materials presented.  A good balance between listening and sharing that made the time pass quickly.  I highly recommend this workshop for anyone looking for tools to make the often nebulous topic of ‘Respect for People’ more actionable. –Lynne Johnson, Operational Excellence Leader Thermo King Central Carolinas and AME 2021 International Conference Chair
